DuVernay was raised by a mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to utilize the arts as a way to express herself. Even though DuVernay lived living in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay was in college when she became attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash from a home belonging to a jury member. As a result of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
